Your Lingering LIst - Partners Coach by Guy Gage

In last week’s message, I recommended that you take action to get the result you want rather than take a “wait and see” approach and then settle for however it works out. When I wrote it, I had in mind some of my clients and acquaintances who tend to delay action. I never dreamed that my “take action” clients would benefit from the message as well.

From comments I heard this past week, I was struck by the “take action” people who were motivated to get moving on an initiative that had been lingering for too long.

One firm leader reported that he had been considering an important firm decision for a while and finally decided that further delay would serve no purpose. He knew what he should do and took action.

Another partner determined it was time to have a clear conversation with one of his managers about how she is undermining her effectiveness with her attitude. He committed to having the conversation later that day.

What I discovered is that everyone has something hanging out there that has been lingering and should get on with it. It’s time.

If “take action” people have a lingering list, you can imagine how “wait and see” people struggle. Regardless, you have a lingering list that is waiting for something to happen. What one thing is waiting for you to take action? What have you ignored, delayed or otherwise neglected that should be at the top of your list?

By the end of this week, commit yourself to reduce your lingering list by at least one entry—and more if you are so inclined. You and others will be better for it. It’s what serious professionals do.
